Proper Education
A couple of months back a good mate of mine suggested I check out this business course that he had just done. His main point of interest in the course was the section on Intellectual Property.
Being the avid procrastinator I am I looked at the course, looked at the cost and factored at the time that it was not really within my time or budgetary constraints.
Over the last few months I've been busily looking for ways to further promote the business and as a result had a meeting with a lady who looks after State Development for Qld ICT companies - more specifically about a book she'd had published that didn't have my company's name in!
Anyway, she also told me about this course and then also told me that the government subsidy for the course was running out and I should get in before it starts costing $8000 (odd).
Anyway - figured what the heck. You can't know everything right?
Wednesday was the first day of this course and I have to confess it's been a very long time since I've had to sit in a room listening to someone talk about a subject for such a long period of time. I think the last "course" I did was a basic networking one for D-Link, and most of that was more about the products they wanted us to flog, than of anything really tangible.
I find accounts pretty dry - even though I have to admit I spend a lot of time looking at my own, so there were parts in the day that I felt my eyes were going to fall out of my head.
That being said, I have to admit there was quite a lot I did learn - about aspects of accounting which I'd never bothered to ask, or hadn't quite understood the meaning of.
I was really thrilled to find that the work Mel and Kenny had done in the last 12 months to fix up our accounts had brought it very much in to line with how the instructor of this course suggested we should have our accounts.
Earlier in the year we'd also sat down and re-evaluated how we break down our accounts, so as to determine what income is generated where. We also spent some time trying to re-group the expenses, even though the expense section is easily twice the size of the income section!
That aside I'm looking forward to what this course has to offer. I'm already looking at a few things I can do to help improve the business and the first thing I've done (which was already well in the pipe line mind you) is do a major overhaul of the structure of the company - and introduced a Technical Coordinator in the office to handle the 1st level help desk calls and also manage the assignment of engineers to jobs.
Ok, so this is all quite boring really - but it's exciting at the same time.
I don't know if it's the enthusiasm to be changing things, or the fact I'm back to exercising every day and eating healthy again, or whether it's going out with the boys on the weekend - but things are positive again, which is great.
Tomorrow night I'm carting all my equipment up to a party in Brisbane to DJ. Should be interesting ;)
On that note, as much as I had intended to write a small novel here, I have to run - it's mexican night at the Yarwood house and I'm late!
