Dealing with children
Well, dealing with adults who behave like children really...
Today was one of those days.. you know, Friday's can go either way really.. they are either ultra cruisy, let's head down to the pub and have a few friday arvo beers - or they are flat out..panicy, going to burst a blood vessel in my temple..
Today was the later.. and the reason for this was the self absorbed, self centred rantings of a movie producer with a God complex and the need to berate everyone around him...
Yes, introducing the amazing CB.
It all started yesterday, when one of our engineers had to reload CB's laptop, because well, CB gets his laptop so bogged down with crap, that it runs like shit - and then when software doesn't install properly, he blames everyone else except himself... after our engineer had taken a fair amount of abuse already from him taking 4x as long as he should installing a printer, we told him he had to re-format.
And being the difficult little SOB he is, he of course had none of his CD's, so we had to insist that unless he could provide us with proof of ownership we could not install the software - or he had to buy it.
Anyways, Derek lost a day re-formatting and re-installing CB's notebook, importing back his mail, etc and dropped it back to him in the afternoon. In the meantime a few important jobs cropped up and since I'd recently had a chat with him about prioritising his work properly he got a little panicy about what to do.. we pushed the jobs back to today and off he went..
This is when problem #2 struck: Telstra, the owner of the Australian broadband infrastructure, which seemingly is operated by a bunch of blind mice - as they never seem to get anything done properly.
This locked Derek into a day battling the dark forces of Telstra Bigpond.. whilst the afforementioned 2 year old ranted and raved about how his notebook wasn't setup properly and how he couldn't understand how to use the new version of Word and Outlook and how someone needed to come out NOW.
Note: He won't call me anymore. He doesn't abuse me. It probably has something to do with the fact I won't take his shit. Instead he'll demand other people call me, other people he can scare into calling me, who I will feel sympathetic towards, because they are the ones copping the abuse he's too chicken shit to hail at me.
[sigh]
Anyways.. I have been asked to go fix his notebook on Monday, because CB is just looking for a reason to abuse Derek further..
did i mention [sigh]
In more positive news, I met with Melina last night to discuss her coming back and working for me.. contracts have been drawn up, and she's coming back on the 23rd of July. I've continued to drop hints with various clients I know have dealt with her and they're almost as excited as she is, which really is fantastic.
I've also promoted Kevin to Senior Network Engineer.. as he really deserves it.. and I need a good mentor in the group to look after the other two.. as I want to slowly step back a little and be able to enjoy my life a little more.. Kev is fantastic.. it's sad to say I nearly didn't hire him because he was substantially older than me - I had a fear of employing people older than me because I didn't think they'd handle having a boss who was in his mid 20s..
Ironically, Brendan insisted I hired him.. and if Brendan did one thing good for the company, this was it.. he has been an absolute God-send, and everyone loves him..
After work I headed into Southport for a beer with Warren+Jules.. well, more so Warren, as July is 13 weeks pregnant - they've just been for their final check up and are now happily announcing it to everyone! :)
After the pub we went and saw Shrek The Third.. it was excellent.. i love animations.. and i've loved all the shrek's to date.. it's always hard to judge how a sequel/etc will do, but this was quite funny.. amazingly some parts just rolled funny after funny..
I'll be sure to nab that on DVD down the track.. I also want to see Bee Movie.. with Jerry Seinfield.. I saw the preview for it ages ago and whilst I find Jerry's sense of humour a little repetitive.. the movie looks pretty funny.. and even if it's not, I'll sit and admire the great work that went into the CG animations =D
yes, you've got me doing new emotes.. :P
might go visit Will at the go kart track tomorrow.. he's dead set keen on getting me to race around in it.. i just need a "spare" $200 to buy my practice license and pay for fuel/etc..
I'd think I'd like to do it at some stage, tho i'd probably run the kart off into the kitty litter.. but with Mel starting in 4 weeks, I think I need to be careful with my finances as I've got a few costs upcoming just to get her started and would hate to put myself in an awkward position again..
That and there's a few things I'd like to do which I think would be better as a shared activity.. so I'll hold onto my $200 for now and just sit this one out..
plans for the weekend.. not sure yet.. at the moment i'm about to sink my teeth into my 2nd glass of red and kick back and give Torchwood another go.. the first time I watched it i thought it was cheap and nasty.. [shrugs]
tomorrow night it looks like i'm doing the swap on my water pump.. sunday morning i've gotta drive to brisbane to check out ADSL problems for an art director up there.. and sunday evening I haven't quite worked out yet - whether it'll be another cruise to the spit then off to Hooters.. or go see Oceans 13 with Warren+Jules..
I've just realised the two married couples I spend most my time with both consitent of guys who's name starts with a W and their wives names starting with a J.. what's with that?
it's also kinda odd going through their 'pregnancy' phase.. i mean, i've had friends who have had kids before.. but.. i've never been that close to them.. it's all kinda weird..
apparently i'm going to be doing some babysitting soon.. like hell!
anyways.. it's been an exceptionally long week.. i have Grant starting again on Monday, back during his uni holidays to assist me with some of our software / dev stuff.. gotta start preparing for Mel's return.. and a bit to knock over this weekend..
and.. you can't honestly call my blogs long - have you read how long yours are? :P
so on that lovely note.. i'm going to call it a night...
